Playing in the Dirt

Today, my son and daughter and I got to play in the dirt! Sounds different, huh? Well, not really. With this new church building complete, what is usually the last thing to get done? Landscaping! We had a massive work day today to put close to 100 trees, bushes, and shrubs around our new church. At any given time between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. today, we had close to 30 volunteers working, including K (our daughter), and E (our son). Believe it or not, they really worked. K got really good at spreading out the already placed boulder egg rock to make way for one of the guys to dig the holes. She then was ready to back fill after the plant was in place. E became the designated water guy, making sure everything got watered after it was placed. We spent just over 4 hours working, for which I made sure K got that time registered on her volunteer sheet on file. You wouldn't believe how many scholarship opportunities are out there for frequent volunteers. I was told recently by a school counselor to start logging hours in middle school clear through high school. Knowing this, we have started a file. The only trick, hours have to be verefied by someone other than a parent. Our goal is to have 1000 hours logged by the time she graduates from high school. I have been told, that could translate to as much as $5000.00 in volunteer scholarship money or more if certain other scholarships require documented volunteerism. We're on the way!

Alot of people ask about our garden railroad. He it is. It is actually quite a bit more mature than what you see here. This was July 4, 2006.
