Our son finally went back to school today. Our daughter has been back for a week now, but since he is now going to a private school while she is at the public school, he had an extra week off. He got up, however reluctantly, after much goading on my part. He even turned the light off and went back to bed at one point. After he was up and dressed in his very handsome uniform, he was ready to go. We had the "Meet your Teacher" night last night and he has the same teacher he has tutored with all summer. At least that will curb his anxiety. As we were leaving last night, he put his arm around me and said "thank you for my new school Mom, I love it!". I know he hasn't even started yet, but I can tell he is more confident and is looking forward to a good year. He has 8 fewer kids in his class than he did at the public school last year in a room 1/3 bigger. As we got to the school, we were directed to the 2nd grade classes as everyone waited outside for the bell. He sat down next to some kids and they all started visiting as if they were best friends. He is the "new" kid, but they took him in like he's been there from the beginning. That, if anything, is another reason for this switch. These kids have a whole different attitude. They have learned courtesy and respect for themselves, each other, and adults. This is more difficult to find in the public schools. It's not totally absent, but those parents who are committed to the private school ideal, tend to teach this in the home. I have a feeling this is going to be a turning point in our sons life and education. Only time will tell, but I really feel good about this.
On the road again....
