I just got back from delivering my daughter to her first day of school at Middle School. She is leaving the confines of elementary school for the bigger, more grown up middle school. In all of the years I have made this first day of school trek, this is only the second time I actually teared up a little. The other time was the first day of kindergarten. She has been so excited for this day. She had her clothes laid out, her alarm clock set, and she voluntarily went to bed at 9:00 p.m. last night so she was well rested. As I drove away, the Van Zant song about watching your children growing up "That Scares Me" was playing on the radio. I have heard this song many times, but today it was different. She is growing up, and it is somewhat scary. My sister and I realized yesterday that her hands are bigger than ours. It has been pointed out that when she wears tennis shoes and I am bare footed, she is as tall as I am. Our doctor has estimated she will reach a height of 5' 7" to 5" 10". I watched as she gently threw her volleyball back and forth with our neighbors 2 year old grandson. I have also witnessed how supportive and caring she has been to our other troubled neighbor who is going through a divorce. Despite the "growing pains" we are also experiencing with our pre-teen, she is a really good kid with a big heart. What more could I ask for?
