Remember the movie "A League of the Own" a few years back when the spectator yelled "Girls can't play ball!" at the female professional baseball players? Well, we have sorta that kinda thing going on right now in our house. Our son has watched his sister and the other girls in our town play volleyball for the last 4 years. He had come to the conclusion that as much as he loves watching volleyball, it is a girl's sport. We sat down last night to watch the USA "MEN" take on Bulgaria in Olympic court volleyball. "Boy's don't play volleyball Mom, why are they playing volleyball?" Here in the midwest, boys don't play volleyball except for recreation. There are no competitive, organized boys/mens volleyball. They also limit it to the girls at the schools. How do you explain to your son that just because girls only play volleyball here, there are places that boys play too. "Can we move there, I want to play volleyball too!" Well, that was a loaded question. In order for you to play volleyball, we would have to pack up, sell our house, find new jobs, move cross country, find a new house, etc. just so you can play volleyball. How about this, you can play around with your sister, if you show "Olympic" style promise, we'll do just that. Until then, I guess you'll have to stick with soccer, baseball, football, or tennis. Oh yea, he does show promise in tennis; but there again, tennis instruction is only offered in the spring and summer around here. I guess a move to Florida or California might be in order. Yea, right!
