Mom, why can't I text? A new high tech threat!

Before I progress with this post, I must apologize if I offend anyone who read this. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion. I have been bombarded with evidence recently, however, that supports my platform.
My daughter lately seems to have jumped on the "accessories" bandwagon. It used to be, accessories were in reference to jewely, handbags, umbrellas, etc. Now they are cell phones, bluetooths, i-pods, and pda's. She thinks that at the ripe old age of 11, she needs to have the hottest, hippist cell phone on the market! I guess I'm showing my age a little when I think a cell phone is an item of convenience that should be used in emergencies, and to make and take calls when you aren't at home and pay phones are just so "blaise" these days. I don't want to text, check my e-mail, surf the web, make restaurant reservations, or find a better route. I want a phone, plain and simple. Actually, I don't even want that, but you are just expected to have one these days. When I go out shopping, walking my dog, or to a movie, I want to be left alone. I don't want my phone ringing every couple of minutes. Why am I ranting here, you may ask. My daughter wants to text. We won't let her. My husband and I both feel texting is completely ruining these kids' ability to write in complete sentences, with correct punctuation and spelling. I know my grammar isn't always proper, and my punctuation could use some refinement, but at least I can compose a letter, e-mail, or report and it looks like it came from a somewhat educated adult, not a 3rd grader. My next beef is with all of the idiots out there who seem to think they can operate a 2000 pound moving projectile, i.e. a car, and text at the same time. I see it all the time. I had a young kid stopped at a stop light next to me yesterday and he was sitting there texting on his phone. He continued to text after the light turned green! He wasn't driving a used 4 door type car, no he was driving a pimped out Honda Civic with wheels worth more than my entire vehicle. Parents, texting is evil. Yes this is the opinion of just one parent, teacher, and human, but I truly believe this is one of the worst and most dangerous things ever invented. This is one more case where technology is going to have a hand in killing us, instead of bettering our lives. And if you ask, NO, I don't text.

Alot of people ask about our garden railroad. He it is. It is actually quite a bit more mature than what you see here. This was July 4, 2006.
