This week I was asked to take on a new job, which I accepted. I am now the Wedding/Event Coordinator at our church. You see, in the past 30 years or so, we didn't really have many weddings, events, funerals, etc. at our church because we were just too small, and our sanctuary wasn't exactly the Sistine Chapel in terms of decor and beauty. Most folks were actually a little turned off by it. Well, now we have this incredible worship space with a pipe organ and custom made artistic and liturgically matched furnishings. All of the sudden everyone wants to get married here, and everyone wants to hold their event here. After putting together a new "Wedding Guidelines" packet last fall, I was the obvious choice to be the coordinator. We already have two weddings booked and requests are coming in weekly. Luckily, the requests are coming in from mostly members. We are also fielding requests from non-members/total strangers. One of the struggles we have had is dealing with this. Do they really want God's blessing for their marriage in sacred place like a church, or do they just want it because it's pretty? We welcome these folks to our church with open arms, but their schedule of fees are different. All we can hope is that our association with these new folks will somehow translate into their finding a place for God in their marriage and their lives. Whether they come to our church, go to another, or find that meaning outside of organized church is up to them. In the mean time, I hope to use my position to help these couple have beautiful weddings and find the happiness I have had the great fortune to experience over the last 14 years.
