Kind of a wierd title for this post, but let me explain. I have two of my 5 classes where the students have decided that I am generally in a good mood when I wear one of my vintage Hawaiian or floral shirts to work. I have a nice collection of no-iron needed pullover vintage print shirts that I just love. These students swear I'm in a better mood when I wear one of them. I find this interesting. Sure enough I didn't wear one today and I ended up completely going off on my first class this morning. We watched the Democrat candidate (Clinton and Obama) debates in the Sociology class as a prep activity for the Political and Economic Systems unit of this class. We watched it the entire class. These are Juniors and Seniors, and by about the 45 minute mark of the hour and 15 minute class, they were carrying on their own conversations so loud that one boy actually got out of his seat, pulled up the podium stool and sat right in front of the TV. I had been trying to hush them for 10 minutes or so to no avail. At the end of the block, I turned off the TV and read them the riot act about how they were acting like kindergartners, and their noise was not only disrespectful to me but to their peers who actually were interested in this debate. I was pissed, and my tone showed it! Most of them were shell shocked that I would go off on them in this manner. Some were actually a little ticked that I would bother, but come on, these kids are 16-18 years old. I have decided that for Monday when I have them again they are getting a new seating chart. Maybe they will think twice about this kind of behavior.
