Last week, I started a Political and Economic Systems unit in my Sociology classes. We are examining different types of authorities, the electoral process, and systems of government. I assigned a writing assignment for the students asking them about our process of voting. I asked whether they were planning on voting in the upcoming Presidential election. I asked if they felt their vote was important and why or why not. I was somewhat disturbed by the attitude. Many of these students quite frankly just don't care. They don't pay attention to the activities of the candidates, what their platforms are, or what they stand for. I read alot of "It's just boring" I would place it as less than half actually plan to vote or would if they were old enough. This is a sad state of our country. My husband and I just finished watching the mini-series "John Adams" on HBO this week. While watching this incredible depiction of the infancy of our country, I have found myself influxed with a new charge of patriotism. Despite the ongoing war, and the economic woes, we really do live in the best country in the world. This upcoming election is going to be historic. At the very least, we will see either the first African American or female presidential candidate. I may not agree with much of these candidates politics, however, I applaud their courage and committment to press on despite some pretty overwhelming odds. Is our country ready for a minority or a female president? I guess we'll find out in November.
