No laboring on Labor day for this family!

Yesterday was Labor Day. Given the extra day off from School and work, we decided to make a day of it. Last week the kids asked me if we could go on a picnic over the long weekend. We agreed that it would be fun. We decided to make an entire day of it and go to Wichita to the zoo. As we got up yesterday, we discovered the temperature was going to top out in the mid nineties. Sorry kids, no zoo! Plan B. How about the picnic at the Wichita Botanical Gardens and then a trip to the Museum of World Treasures? Cool! We love the Botanical gardens. The Wichita Garden Railroad Club sets up a layout every year during the Christmas season for their "Illuminations" event. This runs 3 weekends in December. It is beautiful with luminaries and lights everywhere. For this day, however, we are going when nearly everything is still in bloom, and during the daylight. We loved the roses, the big purple tree thing, the water features, and especially the butterfly enclosure. E was pretty bummed, however, that a butterfly didn't land on him. We had cold fried chicken, baked beans that my husband made, chips, and tea. What a picnic! On to the Museum of World Treasures. This is a mini Smithsonian. We saw everything from a 65% complete T-Rex skeleton, to Erwin Rommels hat and uniform insignia, to an Egyptian mummy, to a hand written Johann Sebastian Bach piece of sheet music, to a movie contract signed for RKO by Cary Grant. One of the most ecclectic collections of artifacts, but also one of the more fascinating. All in a beautiful "Old Town" three story brick building. This is a really neat museum and is very kid friendly. They even had handouts that are grade specific that works like a scavenger hunt for the kids to use as they tour the museum. Overall, we had a great Labor Day. Now, back to school, work, dance, flag-football, volleyball, and church activities. I'm tired just thinking about it.

Alot of people ask about our garden railroad. He it is. It is actually quite a bit more mature than what you see here. This was July 4, 2006.
