Car vs. mailbox, mailbox wins!

I got a call this morning at work that our mailbox was hit by a car. We were all already at work and school. This happened after a teenager picked up our neighbors daughter and on their way to kill some time before school, they turned the corner heading north onto our street. It was raining and in the girls attempt to find the windshield wipers, she head first rammed our mailbox. The police estimate she was going 25 mph. I experimented this speed, and found I nearly had to floor my van to get to this speed to recreate this accident. Whether this 15 year old driver was actually looking for the wipers or texting or whatever, she now has no car as it is totaled and our neighbors daughter suffered from a concussion and whiplash. This never should have happened. This kid isn't even licensed to drive with friends in the car! I'm sorry, but I am quickly losing patience with these teens. My daughter thinks I am heavy handed and mean sometimes, but I'm sorry, she IS NOT going to pull this. Why anyone would let their not yet license daughter who has seen her share of courtrooms already drive another kid is beyond me. Why our friends would let their daughter, who has also had legal runins ride with her blows my mind too. I just don't get it. Well, we are getting a new mailbox built tomorrow, and I'm sure the fallout from this "kids just having fun" is going to play out for months to come.

Alot of people ask about our garden railroad. He it is. It is actually quite a bit more mature than what you see here. This was July 4, 2006.
