A world class museum in our back yard.

Yesterday we decided to take a day trip to the Eisenhower Presidential Museum just 30 minutes down the road from our house in Abilene. It had been several years since we attempted this outing. The last time we did it, we left frustrated and disappointed because the kids just wouldn't let us enjoy it. We made a note to try again in a few years. This time was very enjoyable, for the most part. Our daughter enjoyed the Mamie Eisenhower section where her fashion items from the 1950's were on display. She was interested in all of the medals and awards also on display, as well as the WWII video footage and vintage artifacts. Our son totally got into the WW II section with the weapons, and models of ships and airplane, not to mention the tank, staff car, cannons and the other war items. He was especially intrigued by the model of the Mulberry landing platforms that were constructed by the Navy during the Normandy landings to transport heavy machinery from the ships anchored several hundred yards away from the beaches. He and I watched a video showcasing real footage from Normandy on the construction of these incredible transport platforms. We also got to see Eisenhower's boyhood home, complete with original furnishings. They couldn't believe that 7 people lived in that tiny house with one bathroom, and that it didn't even have running water until Ike was 18! WOW! We sometimes take for granted that we have what many believe to be one if not the best Presidential museum in our country just 30 minutes away. Not only was Ike a president, we was instrumental in our victory over Hitler and Nazi Germany. This is a real treasure, one I plan to make a point to visit much more often.

Alot of people ask about our garden railroad. He it is. It is actually quite a bit more mature than what you see here. This was July 4, 2006.
