A scary night

Last night we had one of the scariest weather nights I can remember. It all started around 9:00 p.m. when we decided to turn on the radio and get on weather.com to see what was going on. We tried to see on TV but no one was covering these powerful storms! Needless to say, some area affiliates got some scathing e-mails from us regarding their lack of coverage. In summary, a tornado touched down less than a mile from our house and damaged some businesses and destroyed a few homes unfortunately. We got some hail, wind and rain, but nothing major. A town about 20 miles away is 85% damaged by a 1/2 mile wide tornado, and we had a mostly sleepless night wondering what was happening to our daughter who is at church camp about 20 beyond the town that was nearly wiped out. I had to nearly tie down my husband from getting in a car to drive there in the middle of the night, but I know they have a storm shelter and were in it. Sure enough, I got a call from the camp today (I sent several e-mails and left messages) and they did indeed have a "slumber party" in the storm shelter all night. The kids are all fine and they will be doing some clean up today from the wind, but the tornado did not hit them, thank God! Tornadoes and wild weather is all a part of living in Kansas. It's just something you expect and learn to deal with. Our son was pretty scared and decided at one point he had to go to his room and bring some of his favorite toys down to the basement. We helped him do this in between storms, (there were 3 seperate phases to this system that his us). This was important to him, and we helped. He then laid down and fell asleep on the couch in the basement surrounded by his toys. This and us being with him brought him comfort. We now have alot of work to do to recover again. Chapman is under disaster status and the schools all sustained significant damage. The church that one of my friends is pastor of is severely damaged also. I talked to her this morning and she is holding up well, and is starting to coordinate aid for her parishiners. Please say a prayer for the town of Chapman, and also the boys at the Iowa boy scout camp that endured a toronado also last night. They lost 4 boys, and over 40 injured.

Alot of people ask about our garden railroad. He it is. It is actually quite a bit more mature than what you see here. This was July 4, 2006.
