We decided last week to take the kids to a Kansas City Royals baseball game last night while we are in town. To our knowledge, a Royals game hadn't even come close to a sell out, except for maybe opening day, since 1985 when they won the World Series. Last year Steve and I bought tickets off of a vendor on our way into the stadium, 6 rows behind the visiting teams dugout. We figured, last night was no exception. On our way into the stadium after parking a scalper walked by asking US if we had any tickets and I sarcastically said, "Why, is it sold out or something?". "Yes, ma'am!" My husband and I looked at each other in disbelief. I found a Royals staffer directing traffic and I asked, and sure enough this game was sold out due to the fact that this is the first night of the season featuring their "fireworks spectacular" after the show, and a national league team is in town for interleague play. We immediately decided to turn around and head back to the car. This is the first time in a long time our kids were totally disappointed. Our son wimpered a little at first, mostly because he wouldn't get to see the fireworks. A bummer, sure, but good for them to experience. If life was always fun and games and never disappointing, what kind of learning comes from that. It's good to have a plan fall through every now and then, just to bring you back to reality. They handled it pretty well, and sure enough, the Royals lost the game and they got to see the fireworks on TV in the hotel.
