A tragedy at the track

For 4 of the last 5 years, I have been amazed and very proud of the fact that I have managed to pick the winner of the Kentucky Derby. On Saturday I made another accurate pick with Big Brown. He is just such a strong horse. I wasn't alone. He was the 5-2 favorite. I have always dreamed of seeing a Kentucky Derby. Along with going to the Master's Golf tournament, the Kentucky Derby is a dream. The horses are just so amazing. Tragedy struck Churchill Downs this weekend. Eight Belles, the lone Filly in the race held her own against the boys. She came in a very respectable 2nd place, only to go down on the cool down lap. She was euthanized immediately. A horse, especially a thoroughbred racer simply cannot recover from two front broken ankles. As much as I love watching a good horse race, I simply have to wonder why these horses seem to be have more frequent injuries. Barbaro brought us all to tears that day at the Belmont. We watched him fight back only to lose the fight. Another filly on Friday this weekend succombed to injury before the Kentucky Oaks Fillies race. I can only hope these breeders and trainer take note, and do whatever they have to to prevent these injuries. Horse racing will continue, we can't stop it. These horses are born to run, and run they will. I just hope these owners, breeders, and trainers find a way to run these horses without these terrible injuries. I obviously have no answers, however, I am not inclined to watch it happen again. This picture is Eight Belles doing what she loved.
