This weekend is dance recital weekend. We have spent the last 4 days in dress rehearsals and performances for both of our kids, as they finally get to show off what they have spent the last year working on in the dance studio.
My husband and I have a theory about kids. It's not that unusual, and is a common practice. Expose your kids to as many activites as possible and hopefully, through this trial and error, they will find their niche and will find an interest that will give them a lifetime of joy and focus. Right now, our daughter seems to have settled on dance, theatre, and volleyball. Our son loves boy scouts, soccer, basketball, dance, and wants to take piano lessons which we will start this fall. This summer, our daughter is going to church camp, 2 volleyball camps, and will take a 2 week summer daily academic enrichment academy to challenged her mind as well as her body. Our son will be trying out tennis and golf again this summer, and hopefully he will start to show some talent in one or both of those. He is also going to the academic enrichment academy for two weeks along with his sister.
They seem to enjoy this variety. Sometimes, they really like the activity and sometimes it does nothing for them. Much to my dismay, neither has shown any interest in baseball or softball which was my niche. That's OK, I pay every day for those years with my aching knees and am reminded everytime I look at the sliding scars on my left leg. They were great years, but I like the idea of my kids finding a lifelong passion, not just one for their youth. That seems to be the key these days, find something to enhance your life long into adulthood. It will keep you active and happy long after your physical body starts to rebel.
