Last summer, our pastor of nearly 9 years accepted a call in Kailua, Hawaii and left our church. As we said our good byes, we embarked on the process of calling a new pastor. For the first time in this church's history, we not only had a wonderful congregation and a myriad of ministries to offer, we had an incredible building too. We just completed a $2.5 million building project that included a new sanctuary, commercial kitchen, pipe organ, fellowship hall, and education center. Our family even took on remodeling and refurnishing the pastor's office. Tonight, the Call Committee presented their candidate to the congregation. Around 120 members turned out to meet Pastor Hawkins, his wife and 2 year old son. He spoke of Peter and the journey from shallow to deep water and back. My first thought as I listen to him was, oh my goodness, I feel like I'm back in the Baptist church! As much as I have embraced the Lutheran church, the one thing I generally miss about Lutheran ministers vs. Baptist ministers, is their poignant, dynamic preaching. Pastor Chris might as well be a motivational speaker. I haven't been so moved by a sermon in years! I felt great walking out of church, and am totally energized. Pastor Chris is 34 years old, but mature and insightful. I spoke one on one with him about Eric and asked his opinion regarding how he could assist us with building a balance between the Catholic Church and our Lutheran faith. He was totally supportive and his suggestions and ideas, which are too many to mention here were just what I was looking for. Steve and I have struggled in recent months with many aspects of our church. We found ourselves "taking a break", but now feel the Lord has sent a shepherd for us and for our entire congregation. I looked around the room at the people I have come to love and saw the smiles on all of their faces. It's like a huge weight has been lifted from our shoulders. I can't wait to see what the Hawkins era will bring, but I have a feeling it's going to be some great things!
