I am not very complimentary of young people these days, but every now and then, they really step up to the plate and show that they have a heart. Yesterday at South High, my alma mater and the school I am now exclusive to in my job as a full-time substitute teacher held a hair cutting event during lunch as a tie in for the local youth Relay for Life event this weekend. A friend of mine, who is a teacher at the school, came up with the idea. Her husband is a cancer survivor as is the wife of another teacher who co-organized this. She agreed to cut her long hair if 5 other students and/or staff agreed to cut theirs. She got exactly 5 to agree. They brought in 3 South High grads who are now local stylists to do the cutting. Within 45 minutes of the first cut, students and staff were lining up to have their hair cut for this incredible cause. By the time the lunch hour was over, the stylists had to call in to their salons and re-schedule their appointments, and 17 cuts were done by the time the end of day bell rang. That is 17, which is 11 more than was originally planned. One boy had mid-back length hair, and he cut his head bald for the cause! The kids in the commons were applauding and very supportive. They complimented everyones new style, and many committed to getting their hair cut when it gets long enough. I am extremely proud of these students and their response to this cause. It just goes to show how big their hearts are! BTW, the Salina Journal story stated 14, but they left before the final count.
